Review: Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel and Spa on Del Monte Golf Course

The Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel located on the Del Monte Golf course is centrally located in Monterey, California and only a quick five-minute drive to popular attractions in the area includuing Fisherman’s Wharf and the Monterey Bay Aquarium

Bixby Creek Bridge on Highway 1
Hotel Overview:
The family-friendly hotel is one of the largest in the area spread out over 22 acres and offers great amenities you’d come to expect of a Hyatt Regency branded hotel.

The hotel has 550 guestrooms, including 27 suites and offers great amenties such as the Del Monte Golf Course, pools, a Marilyn Monroe Spa, tennis courts, firepits, fitness center and dining choices on site.

Valet parking is available, but you’d probably be better off just parking yourself next to the building where you’ll be staying, as the hotel buildings are quite spread out from the main lobby and check-in area, so be prepared for lots of walking if you want to dine at one of two restaurants or the Fireplace Lounge located in the main building.

Main Hotel Lobby
Note that there is a daily resort fee of $25, which covers the following items:
  • Complimentary self-parking and valet-parking
  • Pool area games, e.g. ping pong tables, shuffleboard, beanbag toss, life-size chess and Connect Four, as well as board games available for lobby or in room use
  • Complimentary golf club storage
  • Complimentary tennis court time(racquets and balls included)
  • Two electric vehicle charging stations
  • Complimentary Business Center services (Internet, printer and computer use)
  • Daily newspapers available in the lobby

Also, included with the resort fee is a 10% discount at the Tompkins Tennis Pro Shop and Del Monte Pro Shop.  Standard Internet service is complimentary while additional fees apply for premium Internet service.

The resort fee is a little steep in my opinion for the property and what it covers and the only way to avoid it is if you have top-tier Hyatt Globalist status (formerly Diamond status) or are staying on an award stay via World of Hyatt points (15,000 points/night).

For our most recent stay here, we stayed in the Monterey Suite offering 685 square feet of space and a separate living room, perfect for a family of four.

On-Site Dining Options:
There are two restaurants on-site, as well as a fireplace lounge.
Tusca - Experience the best of Tuscany and California in this exquisite Monterey restaurant.
Knuckles Sports Bar - Enjoy a relaxing lunch or dinner in a casual and fun Monterey, California restaurant setting.

Fireplace Lounge - Enjoy the warmth of good company and your favorite drink in our charming lobby lounge.

There is a also a small coffee shop, The Market, offering on the go options.

If you have breakfast included with your rate plan or through World of Hyatt status, you’ll get to enjoy breakfast at Tusca every morning.  Options include a full breakfast buffet, continental breakfast or ordering off of a menu.  Weekends only offer the buffet options.

My Experience:
Overall, this hotel is a solid choice if you’re planning a trip to Monterey.  Given the other options in and around the area, if you want a full service hotel experience offering great customer service at a fair price, the Hyatt Regency Monterey is your best bet.  While the hotel could use a little upgrading, as it can seem dated, the value proposition for this hotel is pretty good.  It’s also not located on the ocean and also doesn’t offer any ocean views, but a quick five-minute drive solves that issue.

The hotel buildings feel a bit dated (see above)
And lastly, located next to check-in as you make your way out the back side of the hotel lobby, there is a Hyatt Residence Club desk offering gifts or reduced rate stays at the nearby Hyatt Highlands Carmel for attending a timeshare presentation.  The staff are nice and very friendly at the desk, but be warned they can get on your nerves every time you walk by if you are not interested in singing up.

I am quite familiar with the Hyatt Residence Club so didn’t mind chatting them up about the offers and gifts for attending a presentation.  If you wanted to tour the Hyatt Residence Club Carmel  (timeshare presentation), located 15 minutes South on Highway 1, you can get a $100 gift card, other gift or a reduced rate stay to use in the future.
