Review: Hyatt Regency Orange County

The Hyatt Regency Orange County is a great place to stay during your next trip to Disneyland.  Given the large amount of hotels near Disneyland, with pretty much every major hotel chain you can think of being represented, I chose the Hyatt Regency due to the benefits I would receive staying here, the reasonable prices and since I wanted to check out this property for this visit, as I had previously stayed at the Hyatt Place down the street.

Overview of the Hotel:
The hotel, located in Anaheim, is only a few minutes from Disneyland and a twenty minute drive from John Wayne/Orange County Airport.  It is a large full-scale hotel with 656 rooms, with 242 of those being suites and 87 kids suites.  There are two towers, the North Tower, where all of the suites are located, and the South Tower, which are both connected by a large open atrium.  The check-in agent mentioned this property used to be separate office buildings and the reason for the layout of the hotel.

There is a Hyatt shuttle to Disneyland that runs every half hour throughout the day.  The shuttle will cost $5 for ages 11 and up, $2 for ages 4-10 and free for children ages 3 and under.  The shuttle departs the hotel at :15 and :45 of every hour and departs Disneyland at the top and bottom of every hour, starting 45 minutes prior to park opening and running until an hour after the park closes.  The shuttle did get crowded during morning peak times and around park closing time, so you may want to plan accordingly.

There is a $24 per night charge for parking, which can be either through valet or self-parking.  Since the price is the same for both, I used the valet.

The hotel also features two heated outdoor pools, a basketball/tennis courts, a firepit, kids arcade and a 24-hour gym.

On-Site Dining
The Hyatt Regency Orange County has a few on-site dining options.  For our most recent visit, I preferred having the option of grabbing food at the hotel versus a previous stay at the Hyatt Place down the street, which is more limited in service.

Tusca - Open for breakfast and dinner.  Since there isn't a club lounge at this hotel, the Hyatt Diamond breakfast benefit is at this location.

OC Brewhouse - Open for lunch and dinner.  Offers drinks and classic American food

Citrus Grove Deli - Good for sandwiches, salads and quick snacks.  One thing to note about food/drink diamond welcome amenity is that instead of room service delivering it to your room, the Hyatt OC is testing out a new option where they give you a ticket to use at the deli where you could select any two items, which we preferred.

Starbucks - full service Starbucks on site, just past the lobby area

Summary & Tips From my Experience
Our most recent stay here was pleasant and as expected.  We attended the Halloween party at Disneyland and then Disneyland and Disney California Adventure on consecutive days after.

I booked a 1 bedroom suite using a combination of points+cash with a diamond suite upgrade, i.e., $75 and 6,000 Hyatt Gold Passport points, as this property is a Category 3 in the Hyatt program.  Room rates were going for over $250 for our travel dates, which I felt was a bit steep given all of the options near Disneyland.  Booking the room/suite using a combination of points plus cash saved us quite a bit of money.

The hotels onsite at Disneyland are all very nice (and can be expensive), but do have an added convenience of being much closer and within a short walking distance through Downtown Disney to Disneyland or directly into the park, if staying at the Disney Grand Californian.  I feel you'll get more 'bang for your buck' staying at an off-site hotel, but this would all depend on your particular preferences.

As a side note, another Hyatt hotel (Hyatt House) is currently under construction, located closer to Disneyland, and is within walking distance to the park.  The new Hyatt House wouldn't have the dining options on site as the Hyatt Regency does, but would feature similar room/suite types, albeit on a much smaller scale than the Hyatt Regency Orange County.

If you're planning a trip to Disneyland anytime soon, the Hyatt Regency Orange County is worth considering for your stay.  And if not the Hyatt Regency, what hotel do you prefer when visiting Disneyland?  For more information on hotels in and around Disneyland you can find the best deal, compare prices, and read what other travelers have to say about hotels in and around Disneyland by visiting TripAdvisor before you go!
